The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) launched an innovative training program for PhD students in 2008. The curricula were designed and reviewed by senior academics from all relevant disciplines across Africa, Europe and North America.
Both the individual sessions and a phased program put into practice the most effective, participatory principles for teaching and learning by adults. Shaped by four key elements, the methodology is non-hierarchical, multidisciplinary, experiential and based on peer-learning.
Here, CARTA offers its approach and activities, further refined through extensive practice over time, for you to use or adapt as you prepare to train doctoral students.
CARTA has designed methods and activities to equip PhD students with critical skills and competencies. The skills matrix guides you to the specific sessions that build particular skills. For each session – whether it takes a few hours, a day or a week – CARTA provides steps for the facilitator to follow, a suggested schedule and resources such as readings and videos.
A series of videos that demonstrate CARTA’s key approaches and sessions in action.
To share and integrate the CARTA method within universities and research groups requires a skilled cadre of facilitators. Experiencing the methods in action for themselves is crucial. You can use or adapt this manual to introduce the CARTA approach and a selection of activities to a group of future facilitators. By building this training into your department or faculty’s regular schedule, you can ensure that the methodology is mainstreamed in a sustainable way within your institution and with partners.
